ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN CHEMICAL PLANT PROCESSING SAFETY & MANAGEMENT
Overview:
The Advanced Diploma in Chemical Plant Processing Safety & Management course is designed to meet the expectations of the industrial environment, which include increasing output, near-efficiency, cost management, and tight quality controls, among other things. Chemical processes have gotten more sophisticated and costly. Plant outages are difficult to accept. The topic of safety has taken on substantial relevance in order to suit the demands of enterprises. Any omission in these areas might be highly expensive. As a result, engineers are expected to have practical experience with this subject. With this in mind, an attempt has been made in this book to give fundamental knowledge regarding safety in the chemical and process industries.
Case studies provide a wealth of knowledge and insight into the causes of failure, allowing for genuine learning. Readers are encouraged to make the most of the case studies mentioned in the course content. It is intended that this course would be beneficial to engineers working in these fields in industry, that the course content will be included in university curricula, and that it will serve as a reference for policymakers in the field. Lots of literature was consulted while preparing this course material, as well as the practises used by leading industries in the country, such as Indian Oil, ONGC, Bureau of Indian Standards, Ministry of Environment and Forest, and several other institutes that have published codes, standards, and specifications on chemical plant safety. This course book would not have been possible without the help of their literature, which is warmly thanked.
Chemical Processes Explosions:
An explosion is a sudden rise in volume and energy release, frequently accompanied by the development of high temperatures and the emission of gases. Chemical plant explosions must be avoided at all costs. During a chemical process, there are two basic sources of explosions:
- The substance exhibits explosive qualities and is energetically unstable. A thorough safety analysis of the process will reveal whether any materials are susceptible to shock, friction, heat, or other factors, and may necessitate particular handling methods.
- The process might result in uncontrolled heat or gas generation, resulting in flammable vapour escape, or over-pressurization of the reactor, resulting in rupture and loss of combustible contents.
To reduce the possibility of uncontrolled heat generation, the process must be investigated using a Reaction Calorimeter to determine the Heat of Reaction (enthalpy) and the rate of heat release, allowing a process to be devised that minimises the risk of loss of control.
